Welcome

Electrotherapy on the Web is a site that provides current, non commercial information on various aspects of Electrotherapy. It is not presented as a replacement for current texts but attempts to provide an independent view of the current state of the art. The range of pages and topics continues to expand, and some of the long standing pages get updated whenever I can. There are still some new pages to write and new developments to add all the time.

The website is sponsored by PhysioMed, to whom grateful PhysioMed Logothanks are extended.

UPDATED HANDOUTS - JULY 2008

I am in the process of updating several of the handouts and have done the THERAPEUTIC ULTRASOUND, the TENS, PULSED SHORTWAVE and the INTERFERENTIAL ones so far. They are freeely available from the DOWNLOAD page (from the main menu). The web pages to match have yet to be completed, so for the moment, the handouts are ahead of the web pages. I am in the process of doing the Current Concepts handout. Will let you know as soon as it is completed.

Electrotherapy News

The May 2008 edition is out (e mail distribution) and a pdf version is available from the DOWNLOAD pages in the normal way for those who either have not subscribed for the email version or who prefer the pdf format.

Ultrasound Review Paper

I have a review paper coming out in Ultrasonics and for those of you that have access to this journal, it is already available for access online :
Watson, T. (2008). "Ultrasound in contemporary physiotherapy practice." Ultrasonics 1874-9968 (Electronic).
I will let you know the full reference once it has appeared in an issue rather than just online access

NEW : Updated Pages

Ultrasound Gels and Coupling Agents :
The Ultrasound Gels and Coupling Agents page has now been updated (go to Modalities / Ultrasound and select from the menu or go direct from HERE)

Ultrasound for Apomorphine Nodules :
I have been working on this topic for some while in reponse to numerous enquiries, and a summary of the information that I have plus the results of a preliminary clinical study can be found HERE (or go through the MODALITIES / ULTRASOUND menu) and also download a .pdf version from HERE. There are several publications coming out of this study, and the first one, on the appearance of the nodules on scanning ultrasound can be found at : Edwards, H. Poltawski, L. and Todd, A. (2008) Sonographic Characterisation of Tissue Changes Associated with Infused Apomorphine
Hydrochloride: A Case Series. Ultrasonics 16(3);155-159

Shockwave Therapy :
There have been numerous requests over the months for some updated info on Shockwave. I have a BIG pile of articles on the subject to review, but have put up some of the information whilst I am still working on the rest. You can get there through the MODALITIES pages or direct from HERE

Ultrasound and Fracture Repair - References :
I have provided a list of references (covering 2000 - 2007) relating to the effects of ultrasound on fracture repair and associated matters. Some relate to cell, some to animal and some to clinical studies, but they might provide a useful reference source for those of you looking for such material. They are linked to the Ultrasound for Fracture repair pages (link through the Modalities page) or else go there directly from HERE. Enjoy!

UPDATE : Optimising Tissue Repair Courses

I run a series of 1 day courses looking at the current issues in tissue repair and how they can be influenced by manual therapy, exercise therapy and electrotherapy. Rather than run lots of them, each for 20 people scattered around the country, I am trying (in conjunction with PhysioUK) to run a limited number of sessions. There have been several recently - in Hertfordshire, Leicester and Edinburgh. The only others to run this year are in LONDON (26th April 2008) and North West (Cumbria) (15th November 2008). Details are available from the COURSES page or direct from PhysioUK

Old Electrotherapy Books

I do have a collection of text from over the years, but have a growing interest in some comparative work and would therefore like to get my hands on ANY old editions of electro texts. Rather than throw them away, leave them unused on the shelf or selling them on e-bay, I would appreciate first option. Not trying to grab them for free (though resources are limited). If you have anything that might be of interest, or know somebody else who might have, please do e mail and let me know (t.watson@herts.ac.uk).

The information on these pages is provided in good faith and should be treated as such. If you make use of the information, please acknowledge its source - I am constantly amazed to see where this information appears without reference - I have no problem if you want to use it - that is what it is here for - but please do the decent thing and acknowledge the source.
